The Imam Reza shrine is located in the city of Mashhad, the capital city of Khorasan province. With one million square meters of construction, this Shrine is considered to be the largest place of worship in the world. It is a huge complex which contains the mausoleum of the eighth Imam of the Shiite Muslims. The other parts of this complex include Goharshad Mosque, a museum, a library, four seminaries, a cemetery, the Razavi University of Islamic Sciences, a dining hall for pilgrims, various big prayer halls, and other buildings.
Shah Tahmasb, the second king of the Safavid dynasty, made some repairs on the building and on his order about 250 Kg of gold was used to cover the dome, the minarets and some halls. This complex is one of the tourist attractions both for domestic and international visitors. Approximately 25 million tourists and pilgrims come to this shrine annually. In recent decades many tourists from European countries have showed interest in visiting this shrine.
